News from Mykolaiv – one of our southern churches nestled between Kherson and Odesa

Dear brothers and sisters, friends,

We send you sincere greetings from Mykolaiv.  Our Church began in 1997 thanks to the mission efforts of MTW missionaries.  When our invited pastor left the church in 2009, pastors from our neighbouring Presbyterian churches helped us continue our services. All of them, whenever they were able came to encourage our congregation and minister to us through the preaching of the Word and administration of communion.  At that time, we only had two ordained elders in the church, but they took it upon themselves to continue the ministry of the church for those in the congregation who remained.  For almost 12 years, they led the church and preached to the people while working their own jobs to support and care for their families.

The church has always been very active in serving the congregation and community.  Since the initial mission plant, we had a Women’s Ministry focus and soon added a children’s ministry as well. Additionally, we gave help to others through mercy ministry activities and actively ran evangelization outreaches while creatively cooperating with other Evangelical churches in our city.  Our church definitely went through many struggles, but we always persisted and had warm fellowship.

When the full-scale war began on February 24, 2022, six families – the women and children of those families at least fled the city.  People left for differnt countries throughout the world.  The men in the church who were left, continued to care for those who were left..  They helped with medicines, food, and spiritual support, driving around the city even as it was being shelled to bring physical help and spiritual hope. The service in the church premises also continued and weekly online meetings were also broadcast. We made many trips to the villages surrounding Mykolaiv to help them as well, and as soon as Kherson was liberated in November 2022, Andrey and his brother began travelling to Kherson, an hour away, to help their church, which had been surviving under russian occupation until that time.

By God’s grace and in the midst of War, Andriy was ordained as the Pastor of the Mykolaiv Church in 2023. He continues to travel back and forth to Kherson, on very dangerous roads, twice a month to preach and administer the sacraments.

Our women’s ministry also did not cease during the war, despite so many families leaving.  Thanks to donations through MTW, we have been able to provide a lot of humanitarian help in our city and beyond, especially after the russians destroyed the Kakhovka dam and caused catastrophic flooding. Many people from occupied regions and places that facing massive, daily shelling have fled into the surrounding villages. They often don’t have proper places to stay or any work to support themselves.  We continue to visit these villages and provide humanitarian help.

Our church has also established a relationship with the Children’s Rehabilitation Center for Children with Special Needs. People with disabilities are still heavily stigmatized in Ukraine.  When we visit the children, we bring them gifts and essential items, and also spend time with them and share the Gospel.

Thank you for all the support that the Lord sends through your prayers and finances. May the Lord bless you, root you in His Grace, and give you peace.

A final word from Mykolaiv
As the war continues to rain death and destruction around us, we could easily lose hope.  We are encouraged by remembering Job 38:1-11 and 40:1-5 which reminds us that everything we see around us can happen solely according to God’s perfect will.  Psalm 22 helps us understand ourselves in relation to God, turn to him in our suffering, turn our suffering into Praise for his greatness and his care.  We also call to mind Joshua 1:9 and his command to us not to fear as our “Lord and God is with [us] wherever [we] go”, a message that Christ himself echoed in Matthew 28:16-20.  Truly, he is with us to the end.  We are further comforted when we read John 17:8-22 because we see that Jesus loves his people: praying and interceding for them.
